Acupuncture Beats Clomifene for Infertility

A new study has found acupuncture to be more effective than Clomifene—a common treatment for infertility—for infertility due to ovulation dysfunction. During the development of Traditional Chinese Medicine, some of the best educated and highly skilled physicians were those working for the royal court. Because insuring that the emperor had an heir was of great importance, much time and attention was given to fertility and ensuring healthy pregnancies. Because of this historic emphasis, Traditional Chinese Medicine has many effective treatments for infertility. The article that discusses the study also mentions some of the specific physiological changes produced by acupuncture, including “significant changes in sex steroids, hormones, inhibin B and serum cortisol. Acupuncture normalized levels of these secretions and simultaneously increased ovulation frequency.”
