Starting in June, we have been posting what we call Formula Spotlight on our Facebook page. (Sorry we only did one in August). On the first Thursday of each month we’ll be archiving all of the previous month’s Formula Spotlights here on our blog. Be sure to click on the link and like our Facebook page to see them first.
Shen Ling Bai Zhu San
Shen Ling Bai Zhu San is a formula from the Tai Ping Hui Min He Ji Ju Fang (Imperial Grace Formulary of the Tai Ping Era) a ten volume collection of 788 formulas that was compiled by the Imperial Medical Department during the years 1078-85.
Shen Ling Bai Zhu San is traditionally prescribed for the pattern of Spleen and Stomach deficiency with dampness. This pattern manifests as fatigue with weak extremities and weight loss, nausea and vomiting and loose stools or diarrhea. Today this formula is commonly used for loose stools or diarrhea resulting from digestive system malfunction rather than from an external pathogen, for example Irritable Bowel Syndrome.
Laboratory experiments on rabbits have shown that Shen Ling Bai Zhu San may have a regulatory effect on the intestines. Depending on the condition of the subject it either increased or decreased intestinal peristalsis—the smooth muscle contractions that push food through the intestines—as appropriate.
